Jana’s Campaign is dedicated to helping your school or other youth organization reduce gender-based abuse, promote healthy relationship behaviors, and ultimately create a culture of strong respect among the adolescents in your care. By beginning young at the middle and high school settings, primary prevention creates conditions that promote healthy relationships and make gender and relationship violence less likely to occur. Secondary prevention and intervention encourages peers and other bystanders to intervene when witnessing a situation of abuse, and risk reduction teaches teens the steps they can take to decrease the threat of victimization.
Jana’s Campaign recognizes the time and resource constraints of schools and other groups geared toward youth. Therefore, Jana’s Campaign will work to individualize a teen gender violence prevention plan that will best meet your needs. Your plan can include multiple program offerings or can simply start with one pilot activity. Ideally, a comprehensive and coordinated approach is best to build a culture of respectful relationship behaviors. Teen dating violence is a preventable public health problem which requires a comprehensive strategy to stop it before it starts. Jana’s Campaign is proud to provide Kansas middle and high school students with educational strategies designed to prevent teen dating violence through a three-pronged approach: self (increased self-reflection and awareness), peers (recognizing relationship “red flags”), and community (social change).
See map of 2013 & 2014 participating Kansas schools here.
Although over 80% of parents and adults do not recognize teen dating violence as an issue, one in four adolescents will be the victim of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner. Violent behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18 and then escalates. Only 33% of teens who have been in violent relationships have ever told anyone about the abuse. Victims of teen dating violence are more likely to do poorly in school, have an increased exposure to drugs and alcohol, have a greater likelihood of teen pregnancy, face eating disorders, become isolated from family and friends, be involved in physical fighting and attempt suicide.
Jana’s Campaign is dedicated to helping your school educate students about healthy relationships. We will help you implement gender violence prevention curriculum and co-curricular activities intended for use with girls and boys in grade levels 6 – 12. See below for our programming options.
